JD's Pick:

As a book following a guy going to a magic school, The Magicians might seem very similar to Harry Potter. And it would be, if Harry were American, depressed, magic was more complicated than rocket science, Hogwarts was a magic grad school, and Harry gets to visit the world of his favorite fantasy series (a sort-of counterpart of the Chronicles of Narnia), becomes king, and then he and all his friends are hunted by a monster, only called “the Beast,” from that very same realm. This book and its sequels are a good fit for fans of the genre who want something with more adult themes, as well as those, fans or not, who want a book that deconstructs and plays with genre tropes and conventions.
